ATOM Questions BSP’s Removal of National Heroes from New Polymer Bills

The August Twenty-One Movement (ATOM) is raising questions about the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) decision to remove national heroes from the new polymer banknotes. Last week, ATOM criticized the BSP for its justification for removing Jose Abad Santos, Vicente Lim, and Josefa Llanes Escoda from the P1,000 bill, which ATOM calls the “first casualty” of the “hero-less” polymer banknotes.

ATOM Demands Answers on Continued Use of Paper Banknotes

In a statement released on Monday, ATOM challenged the BSP’s explanations and went further, demanding to know when the central bank will completely transition away from paper banknotes.

The group expressed its concern over the perceived lack of respect for Filipino history and national heroes shown in the new banknote design. ATOM emphasized the importance of remembering the contributions of these individuals and their role in shaping the country’s past.

This issue has sparked a debate among Filipinos, with some supporting the BSP’s decision to modernize the currency and others criticizing the removal of the national heroes from the bills.
