The Irish Prison Service is considering closing down the Portlaoise Prison landing that has traditionally held IRA prisoners, the Irish Independent understands.

The reduced threat level and waning criminal influence of dissident republicans in Ireland means there has never been fewer prisoners housed in the E Wing of the high-security prison.
