The Colorado Avalanche continue to defy expectations, securing two impressive wins to start their recent stretch against top Central Division rivals. Following a New Year’s Eve victory over the Winnipeg Jets, the Avs demolished the injury-riddled Minnesota Wild with a commanding 6-1 scoreline on Thursday night.
This crucial win marks the Avalanche’s 18th consecutive game without losing two in a row, showcasing their resilience and consistent performance. They now sport a 13-4-1 record during this impressive streak, steadily climbing the Central Division standings.
The Wild, missing stars like Jared Spurgeon, Jonas Brodin, Brock Faber, and Kirill Kaprizov, were no match for the Avalanche’s offensive firepower. Six different Avs players lit the lamp, with Logan O’Connor, Ross Colton, Mikko Rantanen, Parker Kelly, Artturi Lehkonen, and Nathan MacKinnon all finding the back of the net.

O’Connor opened the scoring with a slick shot past Minnesota’s Filip Gustavsson. Despite a late first-period goal by the Wild, the Avalanche maintained control, demonstrating their composure and ability to withstand pressure.
Mackenzie Blackwood was a brick wall in net for Colorado, stopping all but one shot and solidifying the victory.
"They had been playing really well, and we knew it would be a challenge,” said Avalanche head coach John Hynes. “But our guys came out strong and played with a lot of energy and purpose."
What Went Well: Killer Instinct
Capitalizing on the Wild’s depleted roster was crucial, and the Avalanche did just that. They established an early lead and didn’t let up, shutting down Minnesota’s offensive opportunities.
The Avalanche displayed a lethal killer instinct in the third period, doubling their lead in just a few minutes of play. Goals from throughout the lineup showcased their depth and ability to generate offense from different sources.
"It’s great to see different guys contributing," said Rantanen. "We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now."
What Needs Work: Power Play Woes Persist
Despite facing a Minnesota team missing its top two penalty-killers, the Avalanche struggled to convert on power-play opportunities. Finishing with zero goals on six minutes of advantage, the team continues to struggle offensively in this key situation.
"We need to find a way to be more effective on the power play," Hynes said. "We have the talent to be dangerous, but we need to be more precise and work harder."
While they did manage to score a shorthanded goal, finding a solution to their power play issues will be crucial as the season progresses.
