Israeli hostages released by Hamas as ceasefire takes hold

US President Joe Biden welcomed a ceasefire and said hundreds of trucks were entering the seaside enclave to help its civilians.

“Today the guns in Gaza have gone silent,” he said, adding that it was now up to the incoming Trump administration to ensure the ceasefire deal was fully implemented.

The ceasefire agreement has come into effect on the eve of the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, who returns to the White House on Monday.
