Gianna Spironello Auditions for Canadian and U.S. Performing Schools

Gianna Spironello Finds Her Voice: Auditions for Top Musical Theatre Programs

In the vibrant world of musical theatre and classical singing, few students catch the spotlight as early as Gianna Spironello. The Grade 12 student from Sault Ste. Marie is at the crossroads of her musical journey, preparing to embark on the next phase of her career through competitive auditions at top-level post-secondary schools.

A Passionate Journey

Spironello’s passion for music began when she was just six years old. Today, as a Grade 12 student at Korah Collegiate, her talents have attracted attention across Canada and the United States. She has starred in Korah Musical Theatre productions such as Into the Woods and Mamma Mia!, honing her skills alongside renowned instructors like Denine Williams and Dr. Carolyn Hart. These experiences have been pivotal in shaping her aspirations.

Auditioning for the Top Programs

Spironello is currently in the midst of an intense audition process for prestigious institutions, including New York University, the University of Michigan, the University of Cincinnati, and Sheridan College in Oakville. The competition is fierce, with applicants traveling from across the country to secure a spot.

“It’s been a lot of travelling and a lot of preparation,” Spironello told SooToday. “My musical auditions have taken up a huge chunk of my time, but I’m grateful for the opportunities.”

Despite the challenges, Spironello remains optimistic. “The schools are very competitive, especially in the United States. I’m hopeful that I’ll receive an offer, and I’m grateful for the chance to audition.”

The Influence of Mentors

Two key figures have inspired Spironello on her journey: Denine Williams, a retired director of Korah Musical Theatre, and Dr. Carolyn Hart, a voice instructor at the Algoma Conservatory of Music. Both have provided invaluable support and encouragement.

Williams directed Mamma Mia! in February 2024, where Spironello portrayed Donna, a major role. “Mrs. Williams was truly one of the biggest building blocks to my aspiration of becoming a professional singer,” Spironello said.

Hart’s guidance has also been instrumental in Spironello’s success. “She’s a very esteemed voice teacher. It’s such a blessing that I met her,” Spironello mentioned. Hart’s training helped Spironello secure first place in classical voice and second place in musical theatre at the Ontario Music Festival Association competitions in 2024.

Music Beyond the Stage

Beyond her classical and musical theatre pursuits, Spironello is an avid music lover, appreciating genres as diverse as rap, jazz, and pop. She cites artists like Kendrick Lamar, Doja Cat, Laufey, and Tyler, The Creator as inspirations.

“I listen to a lot of rap and appreciate artists with a unique voice and musical knowledge,” Spironello explained. “They stand out in expressing themselves creatively.”

Plan B: Teaching

While Spironello dreams of performing on Broadway, her “Plan B” is to teach, sharing her knowledge and passion with the next generation of performers. “I’d love to get a bachelor of fine arts in musical theatre and possibly a master’s degree,” Spironello said. “Teaching is just as fulfilling.”

Inspiring Others

Spironello’s impact as a performer extends beyond the stage. She recently inspired a young girl after a Mamma Mia! show when the girl approached her and expressed a desire to sing like her. “I felt like crying because you never think that you’re impacting someone. To think I might have influenced a little girl to pursue music is more than I could ever ask for,” Spironello reflected.

Conclusion

Gianna Spironello’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, mentorship, and hard work. As she awaits word on her auditions, she remains focused on her goals and excited about the potential next chapter in her musical career.
