Introduction

Asthma is a kind of heterogeneous disease usually characterized by chronic airway inflammation. It is the most common chronic disease in children and a major contributor to the high prevalence of chronic disease in children, as measured by school absences, emergency department visits, and hospitalizations.1 The majority of children with asthma are able to control their condition with standard therapy, but it is estimated to be difficult for 5–10% of children with severe asthma.2
