Laser technology is going to play an important role in advancing quantum devices, healthcare tools, and optical computing applications. However, a key problem with most modern lasers is that they emit light at fixed wavelengths.

This limitation can be overcome using quantum dots, nanoscale semiconductors that can emit light of different colors depending on their size. They can be integrated into lasers, but they don’t last long. 

This is because when intense light begins to build between the laser’s mirrors, it produces a lot of heat, which ends up degrading the quantum dots.
