Data Protection Commissioner’s decision in TikTok China data probe imminent after ‘no objections’ from Europe

The regulator told the Irish Independent that a month-long consultation with other European data protection authorities about its draft decision on the case is now complete, with “no objections” raised by other European regulators.

It means that the final verdict will be announced within weeks.

The investigation, which began in 2021, is probing whether the Chinese-owned social media giant improperly sent any ­personal data from the EU to China in violation of GDPR privacy law.

It also considered whether TikTok complied with transparency obligations around any such data transfers.

TikTok employs 3,000 people at its European headquarters in Dublin, although it is currently imposing job cuts that could affect up to 300 people there.
