‘Volatile’ Arkansas made Texas Tech basketball coach confident in Sweet 16

SAN FRANCISCO — There was never a moment of panic or frustration for the Texas Tech basketball team Thursday night in the Chase Center. Even facing a 16-point deficit, the Red Raiders felt confident.

Just need a stop and a score, the team thought to itself down 59-43 with 11:40 left, and the game can turn in a hurry.

Turns out, the Red Raiders (28-8) were right in thinking that way. While Arkansas played in the big-bad Southeastern Conference, Texas Tech got plenty of push from its competition in the Big 12. They were prepared to erase the 16-point deficit, and wound up with an 85-83 overtime victory.

“Great talking in our huddles,” Texas Tech guard Elijah Hawkins said. “We all play for each other. We all have extreme confidence in each other. If it’s not somebody’s night, it’s not somebody’s night. The next teammate gotta step up and pick them up. That’s what we did today and that’s what we do each and every game.”

Head coach Grant McCasland said he continued to urge his guys that the game was still within reach. Some of that was because he’s seeing his team overcome dire circumstances throughout the season.

“I’ve seen it enough and we’ve practiced hard enough and these guys do love each other enough,” McCasland said. “It’s just trying to keep them in the fight together.”

And some of it was because he’s seen Arkansas do this before. In the first round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament, the Razorbacks blew an 11-point lead and trailed Kansas by three with 4:55 to go. The Razorbacks rebounded and closed the game on a 15-5 run to advance, but it was enough evidence for McCasland.

If the Red Raiders kept pushing, the Razorbacks would fall into old habits.

“I’d seen Arkansas play enough to know that they were pretty volatile in the way the game goes,” McCasland said. “Get up big in the Kansas game, for example. … So it’s like I’ve seen this team let people in and I’m telling them this is what we want. We want them to get out to a big lead. We’ll find a way.”

After being down 16 with 11:40 to play, the Red Raiders outscored Arkansas 29-13 to close regulation and finished off the win in overtime.
