‘Keep a safe distance’ alert for beachgoers after whale washes up on sand at popular Irish beach

BEACHGOERS have been warned to “keep a safe distance” from a whale that has washed up on a popular Irish beach.

The large minke whale appeared on the sand at Portstewart Strand in Derry on Sunday evening.

Locals rushed to the beach to catch a glimpse of the mammal, but officials have now warned it may not be safe to do so.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs have made contact with the National Trust and assessments are due to take place today.
