Study design and population
This is a retrospective cohort study based on data regarding violence and deaths among women in Brazil. The study utilized data from the linkage of two national databases, the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (Sinan) and the Mortality Information System (SIM), developed by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. Sinan is a system used in Brazil to record notifications of diseases and conditions of public health interest, including violence. On the other hand, SIM is a national system that collects mortality data, including detailed information about the underlying cause of death. The Sinan data used in this study cover the period from 2011 to 2016, and the SIM data include deaths that occurred between January 2011 and September 2017.
