$1 Million Gift to UC San Diego Fuels Brain Cancer Research
The University of California San Diego has received a $1 million donation from the Anders Foundation to accelerate research into brain cancer and improve treatment options for patients facing aggressive forms of the disease. The gift, made through the foundation via Valerie Anders and in partnership with Gayle and Carl Nuffer, was inspired by the Nuffers’ personal experience with UC San Diego Health.
Glioblastoma Diagnosis and Treatment
In September 2024, Carl Nuffer was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a fast-growing and aggressive type of brain cancer. Following his diagnosis, Nuffer underwent surgery, radiation therapy, and participation in a clinical trial. After a period of recovery, the cancer recurred, requiring a second surgery incorporating GammaTile therapy.
Inspiring a Commitment to Research
Despite his challenging diagnosis, Nuffer has approached his illness with courage and resilience, values that motivated his family’s investment in advancing brain cancer research. “Very few people, in the challenging moments of a cancer diagnosis, immediately think of how to help others facing similar circumstances. The Anders Foundation
The Anders Foundation was established in 1993 by William A. Anders, a former astronaut who flew on the Apollo 8 mission, and his wife, Valerie.
