Across the Fields: Rossmore Artists Showcase Work at Cnoc Bui
Six artists from Rossmore, West Cork, are preparing to exhibit their work at Cnoc Bui Arts Centre in Union Hall this Easter, marking the gallery’s opening show of the 2026 season. The group exhibition, titled “Across the Fields,” features the diverse talents of Lesley Cox, Eadaoin Harding Kemp, Anne Harrington Rees, Sara Hodson, Etain Hickey, and Jim Turner.
A Collective Rooted in Landscape
The artists, all professional in their practice, share a deep connection to the natural world and the West Cork landscape. They aim to create an inviting atmosphere for audiences who may not regularly visit art galleries, and will host “Meet the Maker” sessions and a group discussion throughout the exhibition’s run. Interested parties can contact Etain Hickey at [email protected] for more information.
Featured Artists and Their Work
Lesley Cox
Lesley Cox’s semi-abstract oil paintings capture the essence of West Cork weather, created using a palette knife to layer and scrape back oil paint, revealing light and evoking the Atlantic air. Her piece, “A River Runs Through It,” is among the works on display. Cox previously exhibited a solo show, “Colour Theories,” at Cnoc Bui Arts Centre in Union Hall in 2024 The Southern Star.
Eadaoin Harding Kemp
Eadaoin Harding Kemp’s oil paintings are characterized by their lush textures and vibrant colors. Her “Smeara Dubha” (blackberry) series is particularly notable for its richness and depth, creating a sensory experience that almost evokes the feeling of stained fingers.
Jim Turner
Jim Turner, a titan of Irish ceramics, brings five decades of experience shaping clay to the exhibition. A recipient of the DCCI Excellence in Making Award and the Irish Ceramics Award for Outstanding Achievement, Turner combines technical mastery with innovative design. His piece, “Beneath the Ancient Field,” will be featured.
Etain Hickey
Etain Hickey’s ceramics are instantly recognizable for their joyful and intricate designs, deeply inspired by nature. Drawing on Japanese Ikigai philosophy, Hickey approaches clay with a meditative touch, exploring the connection between hand, heart, and head. Pieces like the “Hidden Frog” bowl and the “Country Living” set will be on display.
Anne Harrington Rees
Anne Harrington Rees transforms foraged materials – bramble, rush, and honeysuckle – into sculptural baskets and textiles, bringing the hedgerow indoors. Her work, such as “Ailm II,” is described as organic, tactile, and quietly magical.
Sara Hodson
Sara Hodson, the first Irish artist elected a full member of the UK Society of Equestrian Artists, captures the power and precision of horses in her work. Her pieces, including “Barn Girls” and “The Old Milking Palour,” demonstrate her skill in both royal commissions and large-scale public sculpture.
