In a recent interview with Times Radio, the 63-year-old musician revealed that he struggles with basic mathematical skills, such as counting and adding.
“Counting Bars is Like Climbing Everest”
Mullen explained that his dyscalculia presents a unique challenge when it comes to playing music. “Counting bars is like climbing Everest,” he confessed. “And when people watch me play sometimes, they say ‘You look pained’. I am pained because I’m trying to count the bars.”
Despite these difficulties, Mullen has found ways to overcome the challenges presented by dyscalculia. He has achieved remarkable success as a drummer, contributing significantly to U2’s iconic sound since the band’s formation in 1976.
A New Film Exploring Learning Difficulties
Beyond his musical contributions, Mullen has recently become involved in a new film project called “Left Behind.” The film delves into the experiences of individuals with dyslexia and the challenges they face within the New York school system. U2’s Future Plans
With U2’s latest album, “Songs Of Surrender,” featuring reimagined versions of their extensive back catalogue, the band is now focused on creating new material. Larry Mullen Jr. shared his excitement about the upcoming projects, saying, “We are currently writing new material and doing some initial recording. We hope to tour at some point in 2026. I don’t think it will be what we normally do. I would hope it would be something different, but I’m excited to get back in some capacity.”
Following a successful residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, a state-of-the-art entertainment venue, U2 is poised to continue pushing creative boundaries and captivating audiences worldwide.
