The verdict is in: Matteo Salvini, Italy’s former Interior Minister, has been found not guilty in a case stemming from his refusal to allow an NGO ship carrying migrants to dock in Italy.
“A Good Day for Italy”
Salvini, leader of the far-right League (Lega) party, hailed the verdict as “a good day for me because I am proud to have defended my country.” This statement followed a dramatic court hearing where he declared before entering the courtroom, “I have kept my promises, fighting mass immigration and reducing departures, landings, and deaths at sea.”
His conviction would have sent shockwaves through Italy and beyond, setting a dangerous precedent for any politician attempting to uphold border security. Supportive chants of “Guilty of defending Italy!” rang out from supporters gathered outside the courtroom.
The Open Arms Case
The case revolves around Salvini’s decision in 2019 to block the NGO ship Open Arms from disembarking 147 migrants in Italy after it had rescued them off the Libyan coast. The Italian government, arguing for the safety and well-being of those on board, transferred around eighty migrants requiring medical attention to reception centers. this left less than half of the passengers on Open Arms.
Open Arms, however, claimed they couldn’t remain at sea for three more days until reaching Spain due to the remaining migrants’ immediate healthcare needs. This standoff continued for nearly three weeks until court magistrates seized the ship and ordered the evacuation of the migrants.
“Migrant-taxi” NGO ships operating in the Mediterranean have been often described as providing one of the biggest pull factors that continue to facilitate illegal migration to Europe. They’ve been observed countless times patrolling just outside of African territorial waters and collaborating with human smugglers during their “rescues” before ferrying the migrants straight to EU ports, despite being much closer to non-European destinations.
Political Witch Hunt?
The legal battle sparked heated debate and accusations of political persecution. Salvini’s supporters, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, argued that the prosecution was targeting him for upholding Italy’s commitment to border security.
They point to Salvini’s success in drastically reducing illegal migration numbers by implementing tougher policies. Salvini’s defense lawyer argued that Open Arms could have easily sought port in another EU country if their concern for the migrants’ welfare was genuine, emphasizing that there is no automatic right for any NGO rescue vessel to dock in Italy without proper authorization.
“It’s clear that the well-being of the migrants was secondary, and the first objective was to destabilize Italy,” said Paolo Borchia, a Lega MEP, during a news conference echoing the concerns of many who view the case as politically motivated.
International Support for Salvini
Salvini’s fight for Italy’s borders resonated with like-minded groups throughout Europe. The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, of which the League is a member, rallied behind him, vowing to continue their advocacy for stronger border controls.
“The EU external borders have to be protected, and NGO ships have to be stopped from delivering illegal migrants on our shores,” said Kinga Gál, Vice President of the ECR, in a statement of support.
A Divided Europe
The Salvini case underscores the deep divisions within Europe over migration issues. While some see immigration as a humanitarian crisis that demands urgent action, others argue that uncontrolled migration threatens national security and economic stability.
The outcome will likely impact future policies on migration and the role of NGOs in rescuing migrants at sea
