A Triumph of Teamwork: Moose Rescued From Frozen Lake
The pristine waters of Lake Abanakee in the Adirondack Mountains became a scene of urgency this week as a 1,000-pound bull moose found itself trapped by a sheet of ice. The dramatic turn of events unfolded when a passerby spotted the struggling animal approximately 200 feet from shore and immediately contacted authorities.
Responding to the call, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation dispatched a skilled team led by Lt. Robert Higgins, an Environmental Conservation Police officer. Alongside Forest Rangers Evan Nahor and Matt Savarie, Higgins embarked on a perilous journey across the icy lake, armed with nothing more than dry suits, safety ropes, and a metal spud bar to test the treacherous terrain.
"There’s no handbook for situations like this," Higgins admitted, highlighting the unique challenge of their mission. The varying ice thickness – ranging from a brittle one inch to a relatively stable four – demanded a careful and cautious approach.
To prevent breaching the unpredictable ice sheet, the team lowered themselves onto sleds, distributing their combined weight to ensure safe passage. Upon reaching the distressed moose, the rangers faced another obstacle: the animal’s initial reluctance to cooperate.
"It seemed terrified of the sleds," Savarie explained, noting the moose’s bizarre aversion to the rescue equipment. They ingeniously devised a solution, carefully maneuvering behind the animal and gently guiding it towards a channel cut through the ice by a chainsaw.
The moose, exhausted from battling the freezing water and struggling to stay afloat, finally succumbed to the gentle pressure and waded onto the more solid portion of the ice. After a tense fifteen minutes, the massive animal managed to regain its footing and stood tall, a breathtaking sight for the weary yet elated rescue team.
“It was a testament to their training, experience, and the power of teamwork,” Higgins said.
Once free, the moose ambled back into the wilderness, leaving behind a story of courage, resourcefulness, and the remarkable bond humans can forge with the natural world. The successful rescue serves as a reminder of the threats facing wildlife in New York, from poaching and road accidents to the impact of a changing climate.
