Taoiseach, survivors to attend Auschwitz liberation event

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is travelling to Poland today to attend a commemoration service to mark 80 years since the liberation of former Nazi-German concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Since 2005, the date of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau has been observed annually as International Holocaust Remembrance Day to honour the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and other ethnic minorities killed by the Nazis.

Today’s commemorative event, held at the site of the former death camp, will be attended by about 50 survivors of Auschwitz-Birkenau as well as more than 50 other world leaders and heads of state.
