Security Council adopts neutral US stance on Ukraine war

A United States-drafted resolution calling for a “swift end” to the war in Ukraine but without mentioning Russian aggression has been passed by the UN’s highest decision-making body, the UN Security Council.

The US text marked a clear shift in US position on Ukraine under President Trump, pitting the US against traditional European allies on the council, aligning with Russia and China instead.

Including the elected members of the council, there were ten votes in favour and five abstentions.

The UK and France did not deploy their vetoes, allowing the resolution to pass.
