Empowering Youth Through Legislative Action: A Call for Improved Sexual and Reproductive Health in the DRC

In a important move towards improving the well-being of young people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),the congolese Women’s Consultation Framework (CAFCO) is urging parliamentarians to champion legislation focused on enhancing sexual and reproductive health services. This initiative aims to address critical gaps in access and availability, ultimately empowering Congolese youth to make informed decisions about their health.

CAFCO’s Initiative: A Multi-Stakeholder Approach

Grace Lula, the executive director of CAFCO, emphasized the importance of collaboration during the closing of a recent roundtable discussion in Kinshasa. The focus of the discussion was on the sexual and reproductive health of young people. Lula stressed the need for a unified front, involving both state and non-state actors, to effectively improve the accessibility and provision of essential reproductive health services.

This call to action highlights the understanding that thorough change requires a concerted effort from all levels of society.

Youth Perspectives: Addressing Financial Barriers and Supply Shortages

Oumanbénél fra, the youth platform coordinator in the DRC, underscored the challenges faced by young people in accessing family planning services. These challenges include financial constraints and frequent stock shortages of essential supplies. According to a recent UNFPA report, only 34% of young women aged 15-24 in the DRC have access to modern contraception methods, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

Addressing these issues is crucial to ensuring that young people have the resources they need to make informed choices about their reproductive health.

Advocating for Youth-Friendly Services and Strategic Partnerships

Participants at the roundtable emphasized the necessity of establishing sexual and reproductive health services specifically tailored to the needs of young people and adolescents. This includes creating safe spaces where young people can access facts and services without fear of judgment or discrimination. Moreover, they advocated for the progress of strategic partnerships between parliamentarians to drive legislative change and ensure the effective implementation of youth-focused health programs.

Looking Ahead: The Path to Progress

CAFCO’s initiative represents a crucial step towards empowering young people in the DRC and improving their sexual and reproductive health outcomes. By fostering collaboration between key stakeholders and advocating for youth-friendly policies, this framework has the potential to create lasting positive change. The focus now shifts to parliamentarians to translate these recommendations into concrete legislative action, ensuring a healthier and more empowered future for Congolese youth.
