Revolutionizing hospital Operations: The New Technological Centre

the santa Chiara Hospital in Cisanello,Italy,is poised to redefine healthcare efficiency with its newly unveiled technological center. Functional testing commenced on May 9, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s modernization project. This €70 million facility is designed to centralize energy production and logistics, serving both existing and future hospital buildings. Architect Filippo Terzaghi, the project’s lead, recently conducted a tour of the expansive complex.

ensuring Uninterrupted Service: Power and Logistics Infrastructure

Spanning approximately 12,000 square meters across two main floors and three additional levels, the center is engineered for maximum safety and operational autonomy, even during complete power outages. The basement houses automated systems, including autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs), for the efficient sorting and transport of goods and supplies.

at the heart of the facility lies a robust infrastructure, including:

• 8.5 MW boilers
• 33 MW refrigeration units
• 2.3 MW cogeneration units
• Electrogenic and rotating continuity groups ensuring at least 36 hours of emergency operation

Sustainability at its Core: Reducing environmental Impact

The new technological center prioritizes environmental sustainability. By replacing four older central plants, the system aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by 12%. Future plans include a 6 MWP photovoltaic park and a geothermal well, with the goal of exceeding a 20% reduction in emissions. This commitment aligns with global efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of healthcare facilities.As a notable example, according to a 2024 report by Healthcare Without Harm, hospitals account for approximately 4.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Streamlined Logistics: enhancing Efficiency

The logistical component features a 1,600-square-meter transit point for efficient goods sorting, utilizing underground connections and real-time tracking systems. This streamlined approach promises to substantially improve the hospital’s operational efficiency.

Anticipated Activation and Official Statements

The technological center is slated to become fully operational by march 2026, serving the hospital’s existing infrastructure. The launch has garnered significant attention from local authorities, who have expressed their enthusiasm for the project’s potential impact.

The completion of the technological pole is the first great tangible test of how the construction site of the New Santa Chiara hospital in Cisanello has gone forward quickly despite the many difficulties encountered in these years. More than masonry buildings, we knew that technological plant engineering would have been one of the strengths, even the futuristic ones, of this new hospital and now that these large machines are before everyone’s eyes, we have full awareness of it.

Hospitals by their nature consume a lot of energy: it is inevitable. Though, this new technological and logistical pole has been designed to optimize consumption, with a 12 percent reduction in the needs compared to the old four plants built between the late nineties and the early 2000s: a beating heart for a modern and avant -garde hospital, as will be the new Santa Chiara in Cisanello once completed, where we have invested a lot on technology.
