Eric Dane, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star, Dies at 53 Following ALS Battle
Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, “McSteamy,” on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), similarly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 53 years traditional.
His representative, Melissa Bank, confirmed the news to USA TODAY on Thursday, February 19, 2026. “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” Bank said in a statement. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two attractive daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
The statement continued, noting that throughout his journey with ALS, Dane became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to develop a difference for others facing the same fight. “He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always,” the statement concluded. “Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
ALS Diagnosis and Advocacy
Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. BBC News reports that he spent his final months raising funds and awareness for the disease, the most common form of motor neurone disease (MND).
Despite his symptoms, Dane expressed gratitude for his ability to continue working. However, he was forced to withdraw from an ALS Network gala on January 25, 2026, “due to the physical realities of living with ALS,” according to the organization. He had been set to receive the Dean and Kathleen Rasmussen Advocate of the Year Award. He also missed a scheduled appearance at the 2025 Emmy Awards alongside former Grey’s Anatomy costar Jesse Williams for the show’s 20th anniversary celebration.
In an October interview with The Washington Post, Dane described ALS as a “nasty disease.” He recounted needing stitches after a fall in his kitchen, which caused him to miss the Emmys.
Dane told People that living with ALS was “so horrible” in his last public appearance.
Career Highlights
Born in San Francisco in 1972, Eric Dane began his television career in 1993 with a role in The Wonder Years. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy, appearing in the series from 2006. He also starred as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, and had roles in Charmed and The Last Ship. His film credits include Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque.
Tributes from Colleagues
Fellow actors have expressed their grief and admiration for Dane. Kim Raver, who played his wife on Grey’s Anatomy, remembered his comedic timing and “twinkle in his eye.” Kevin McKidd, who played Dr. Owen Hunt on the series, posted “rest in peace mate” on Instagram. Sam Levinson, creator of Euphoria, told Variety he was heartbroken by the loss of a “dear friend” and that it was an “honor” and a “gift” to work with and befriend him.
Dane is survived by his wife, actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.
