Wexford Illuminates in Yellow for Endometriosis Awareness Month
On Friday, March 20, 2026, Wexford County Council buildings will be illuminated in yellow to mark Endometriosis Awareness Month. This initiative aims to break the silence surrounding endometriosis, a chronic and often painful condition affecting an estimated one in seven women in Ireland and .
Understanding Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of it, affecting areas like the ovaries and fallopian tubes. This tissue responds to the menstrual cycle, thickening and bleeding, but lacking a way to exit the body, leading to inflammation, scar tissue, and significant pain. It is a leading cause of infertility and severe menstrual pain.
Raising Awareness and Building Support in Wexford
The yellow lighting of the Wexford County Council buildings is a visual symbol of awareness, encouraging open conversations and demonstrating solidarity with those living with endometriosis. Alongside the illumination, the event coincides with the launch of the Endo Wexford Support Group, founded by Orla Quirke.
The Endo Wexford Support Group
Orla Quirke established the Endo Wexford Support Group after being diagnosed with severe endometriosis in March 2020, following years of experiencing symptoms. Having undergone multiple surgeries, she recognized the need for a supportive community for those affected by the condition.
“Living with endometriosis can be incredibly isolating,” Quirke stated. “When you are going through severe pain or facing surgery, having people around you who understand what you are dealing with can make all the difference.”
Quirke emphasized that the impact of endometriosis extends beyond those diagnosed, affecting families and loved ones who provide support during flare-ups and difficult periods. The support group aims to encompass the entire community surrounding the condition.
National Initiatives for Endometriosis Awareness and Care
The awareness campaign in Wexford aligns with a broader national effort. The Irish government announced in March 2026 that an awareness campaign around endometriosis will be rolled out across schools and workplaces . Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill highlighted the importance of addressing a critical gap in education regarding the condition and menstrual health.
Recent government initiatives include a national framework to address care issues and a financial support system for those seeking treatment abroad. While the exact number of individuals traveling abroad for treatment is unknown, 20 applications have been received under the new scheme, with ten people having already traveled. Increased treatment availability within Ireland was too reported in the final three months of 2025.
Event Details
The public is invited to attend the lighting ceremony at 6:30 PM on March 20th, followed by tea and coffee at the Talbot Hotel Wexford, Webb Room (upstairs) at 7:00 PM. This will provide an opportunity to meet members of the Endo Wexford Support Group and learn more about the initiative.
