Early Life and the Chelsea Hotel
Rips was born in New York City to Michael Rips, a writer and lawyer, and Sheila Berger, an artist and former model. She was raised in the Chelsea Hotel, which she has described as a “crumbling outpost of outcasts.” Her experiences growing up in this unique environment formed the basis of her memoir, Trying to Float.
During her childhood, Rips was counseled by Stormé DeLarverie when she experienced bullying in elementary school. She attended LaGuardia High School and later Brown University, where she studied literature.

Rips’s writing has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Vogue, Interview Magazine, and The Paris Review. In 2016, at the age of 17, she published Trying to Float: Coming Of Age In The Chelsea Hotel, a memoir detailing her childhood. The book received praise for its “dry wit” and straightforward writing style.
Currently, Rips serves as the features editor of HommeGirls. She also contributes to Cultured, Air Mail, and The New York Times.
