Advent Technologies and Alfa Laval are collaborating on a project to develop fuel cells for shipping

BOSTON –

Advent Technologies Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADN) (“Advent” or the “Company”), an innovation-driven leader in fuel cell and hydrogen technology, announces that it has partnered with Alfa Laval, a global provider of heat transfer, separation and fluid handling products, will collaborate on a project to explore applications of Advent’s methanol-fueled high-temperature proton exchange membrane (HT-PEM) fuel cells in the marine industry.

Funded through the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (“EUDP”), the project is a joint venture between Advent, Alfa Laval and a group of Danish shipowners. The project focuses on testing Advent’s methanol-powered HT-PEM fuel cells as an auxiliary power source for ships. In the course of the project, the fuel cell system will be subjected to a risk assessment by a leading international classification society.

At the same time, the project aims to integrate the next generation of Advent fuel cells. These fuel cells will be based on Advent’s next-generation membrane electrode assembly currently under development as part of L’Innovator, the company’s joint development program with the US Department of Energy’s Los Alamos National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Advent’s next-generation fuel cells are designed to cover the continuously growing energy needs of the maritime industry and show a significant increase in service life, efficiency and electrical output.

Advent’s technology enables the fuel cells to operate at high temperatures between 160°C and 220°C, allowing them to serve as a reliable power source for various applications and industries, including marine, power generation and heavy-duty mobility. The company’s HT-PEM technology can use inexpensive and abundant hydrogen carriers such as methanol, E-Use methanol and biomethanol. In particular, methanol as a future fuel is attracting great interest from the shipping industry, and Advent’s HT-PEM fuel cells work perfectly with methanol thanks to an integrated reformer.

dr Vasilis Gregoriou, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Advent Technologies, said, “The Advent team is committed to accelerating the decarbonization of the marine industry. Our Serene fuel cells run on methanol – a clean alternative to fossil fuels – which is safer to handle than hydrogen gas and is easy to use on site. In the last few months we have seen a great deal of interest from the shipping industry in our methanol-powered fuel cells. This allows us to look to the future with optimism as it allows us to contribute to the industry goal of producing net zero by 2050. We look forward to the successful completion of this highly innovative EUDP-funded project and to further expanding our collaboration with Alfa Laval.”

Jeroen van Riel, Alfa Laval Business Development Manager for Marine Energy Solutions, said: “We are excited to see the outcome of this promising collaboration with Advent, an experienced partner with innovative fuel cell products already in use today. We believe that HT-PEM technology has great maritime potential and look forward to further exploring Advent’s differentiated technology as the shipping industry moves towards decarbonization.”

Morten Hougaard Sørensen, Senior Vice President of Advent Technologies, added: “We thank Alfa Laval for their willingness to bring our extensive expertise and proprietary technology to the joint development of a marine fuel cell solution. The Advent team sees methanol, biomethanol and e-methanol as the fuels of the future in shipping. We are pleased that Alfa Laval shares this view. We hope this project marks the beginning of a long and productive collaboration that will enable a faster transition to a clean energy shipping sector.”
