American soprano and actress Rebecca Luker dies at age 59

Her death was announced by her husband, theater actor Danny Burstein, who said in a statement that the family was devastated. I have no words because I’m in shock.

This year, Rebecca Luker revealed that she suffered from Lou Gehrig’s disease, also called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The artist received a nomination in 1995 for the Tony Award for Best Actress for Showboat and another in 2000 for The Music Man. She was also nominated in 2007 for her role as Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins.

Rebecca Luker and her husband starred in an episode of the popular series Law and order: sex crimes.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Rebecca Luker studied music at the University of Montevallo. She began her Broadway career in 1988 as a cast member of Phantom of the Opera.

She also starred in The Sound of Music and The Secret Garden. She has released several albums, including Greenwich Time, Leaving Home, Anything Goes: Rebecca Luker Sings Cole Porter and I Got Love: Songs of Jerome Kern.

Her last stage appearance was in 2019 when she starred in Footloose.

Many Broadway personalities have paid tribute to the soprano on social media.
