Artistic Gymnastics World Cup scheduled for May in Tokyo canceled | What’s Up News

Tokyo, Mar 9 (EFE) .- The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) announced today the cancellation of the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup that was scheduled for May 4 in Tokyo, which was to serve as a test for the Olympic Games from the Japanese capital.

The decision has been made by the FIG and the Japanese federation “in view of the current travel restrictions, the difficulties worldwide and the measures taken by the Japanese authorities to limit coronavirus infections in the country before the Games”, the international organization said in a statement.

In making the decision, it was also taken into account that, following the cancellation of the world cups in Stuttgart (Germany) and Birmingham (United Kingdom), the FIG had already removed the cup circuit from the list of qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games.

The FIG “continues to work closely with the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee” to prepare for the Olympic event. The World Cup will now be replaced by another national-level competition as a logistical preparation for the Games, the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee said in a separate statement.

Those responsible for Tokyo 2020 also stressed their commitment to organize “Safe Games in collaboration with all parties involved.”

The opening of the Tokyo Olympics is scheduled for July 23, after being postponed one year from its original date due to the pandemic.
