Bengals and 49ers in the Championship Games

Munich – The Super Bowl Champion 2022 is wanted. The two best teams of the NFL season will face off in the finals in Los Angeles on February 13, 2022.

Until then, there are still two playoff rounds on the program. To determine the four teams for the Conference Championship Games, eight teams will meet in the Divisional Round this weekend.

And there have already been two big surprises: The San Francisco 49ers defeat top-seed Green Bay Packers. And the Cincinnati Bengals pull off the same feat. They also knock out a top seed from the playoffs: the Tennessee Titans. The Kansas City Chiefs host the Buffalo Bills in their last two games of the Divisional Round. The opponent of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers around superstar quarterback Tom Brady is the Super Bowl host Los Angeles Rams.

AFC and NFC

The competitive structure of the NFL is based on the division into two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC).

Both are divided into four divisions each. A total of 32 teams from eight divisions fight for a place in the playoffs in the regular season. Each team plays 17 games.

Both conferences have their own playoffs. In each conference, seven teams qualify, which are placed on a seeding list based on their record in the regular season.

The four division champions are seeded in the playoffs. The division winner with the best record is seeded at #1 (NFC: Packers, AFC: Titans), the division winner with the worst record is seeded at #4 (NFC: Cowboys, AFC: Bengals).

Add to that the three teams with the best regular-season records that didn’t finish first in a division. The team with the best record is seeded at #5 (NFC: Cardinals, AFC: Patriots), the one with the weakest at #7 (NFC: Eagles, AFC: Raiders). This makes it possible that the seven most successful teams in a conference do not automatically move into the playoffs.

With the same win-loss record, various criteria decide on the distribution of places – from direct comparison to the conference record to the strength of schedule.
