Boat with Hundreds of Migrants Located Off Florida Coast – NBC 7 South Florida

MIAMI.- Authorities responded to the discovery of a boat with a large group of migrants off the coast of South Florida this Thursday.

The boat ran aground near Boca Chita, a small island north of the Florida Keys near Homestead Air Force Base.

Aerial images from Telemundo 51 showed Coast Guard and Miami Dade police boats surrounding the sailboat, in which the dozens of migrants can be seen on the precarious boat. Authorities were seen throwing life jackets at migrants.

The Coast Guard reported on Twitter that they were on the scene with a sailboat stranded off Boca Chita. “Currently people are safe on the boat and not in the water. We are asking mariners to stay away from the area for safety reasons. Please stay tuned for updates,” Coast Guard District 7 reported.

At first, the nationality of the migrants on the boat has not been reported, nor the total number of people who were on the boat.

Police and firefighters from Miami-Dade County have also participated in the operation, as well as agents from Marine and Air Operations of the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP, in English).

It’s a developing story, come back to Telemundo 51 for more information.
