Saban’s contract extension means he’ll stay in Tuscaloosa for one more year than previously agreed — through the 2029 season, when he will earn $12.7 million in base salary and talent compensation, according to Kelly. The contract ends on February 28, 2030, seven months before Saban’s 79th birthday.
Saban’s average annual salary again exceeds that of Georgia coach Kirby Smart
Kirby Smart, coach of the Georgia Bulldogs – arch-rivals of the Crimson Tide – held the title of highest-paid coach in American college football for a little over a month prior to Saban’s contract extension. University of Alabama wants to secure top salaries for their coaches
According to Kelly, Saban’s new contract includes a clause that requires him – and his representatives – to meet with the University of Alabama’s athletic director, Greg Byrne, every February “to monitor market developments.” In Alabama, if it is determined that the Crimson Tide coach’s guaranteed annual salary is below the average for the five highest-paid college football coaches in the United States or the three highest-paid coaches at the SEC Conference, Alabama “will rate its compensation at the higher of the two increase averages,” says Kelly.
The Crimson Tide has also renewed with athletic director Byrne. He will earn an average of $1.7 million a year, according to Scarborough, and has a contract through June 2029.
After winning the SEC championship and losing the college football championship last season, Saban will look to continue his more than decade-long reign of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) this season. The Crimson Tide opens their 2022 season on September 3 at home against Utah State. On September 10, they’re off to Austin, where they’ll face the Texas Longhorns in their first away game.
