LONDON NEWS, Jan.5, 2021 (Yeclo with Xinhua) – Scientists at the University of Birmingham said on Tuesday they had developed a new test for COVID-19 that can give results in less than five minutes.
This new test simplifies the screening method to a single step and uses an alternative method of amplification called EXPAR (exponential amplification reaction), according to the British university.
The test cuts screening time from 30 minutes to less than five minutes and provides accurate results, local media reported.
It can be performed using standard laboratory equipment, while PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests require higher temperatures to separate DNA strands as part of the amplification process, explained university.
This test was developed as England began its third lockdown on Tuesday since the start of the COVID-19 epidemic in the United Kingdom.
Scotland also started a new lockdown on Monday at midnight, and closed schools until February 1.
In order to get life back to normal, countries such as the UK, China, Germany, Russia and the United States are in a race against time to develop vaccines against the coronavirus. End
