Cowboys reconnected with Speedy, former starting receiver

The Dallas Cowboys are showing interest in a new wide receiver as the team hosted the former Cleveland Browns, who started Antonio Callaway as a wideout for a tryout on Nov. 11, 2022. The Cowboys also worked on quarterback Jacob Eason and receiver DJ Montgomery, per NFL transaction line.

Callway had 43 receptions for 586 yards and five touchdowns during his 16 appearances, including 11 starts, for the Browns in 2018. Cleveland fired Callaway in 2019 and the playmaker has had brief stints with the Dolphins and Chiefs.

Callaway had made a fuss about the 2018 NFL draft, but it was life away from football that made the receiver fall. Cleveland eventually picked Callaway in the fourth round, and the receiver hasn’t been able to make a significant impact since his rookie season.

“I was just watching him,” a Team Pro personnel director told NFL.com ahead of the 2018 draft. “Really a natural athlete and a pretty good player, but there are just too many headaches to deal with so I can’t see us giving him a chance. Our owner will say no and I don’t even think we would put him on our board to be honest.”

Cаllаwаy ran a 4.41-second, 40-yard dash

The fast playmaker posted a 4.41-second-40 time on the NFL combine. On the way to the 2018 draft, NFL.com’s Lаnce Zierlein described the dilemma front offices faced after Cаllаwаy was busted in Florida.

“Don’t kid yourself, if Cаllаwаy had pulled off a trouble-free 2017 with even average production, he would be a big Combine effort away from being one of the most-loved receiver-position talents in this draft,” so Zierlein wrote in his preliminary profile. “His character concerns have gotten to a point, however, where they could wipe out any career opportunity. His talent and explosiveness give him a good chance of making a roster at some point, but being able to stay the course and fulfill his potential seems unlikely. If he pulls himself together, he could become a dangerous NFL talent.”

The Cowboys were connected to multiple receivers

Dаllаs is clearly trying to improve its receiver group ahead of the post-season. NFL Network’s Iаn Rаpoport and Mike Gаrаfolo reported that the Cowboys had made trade bids for Texаns’ Brаndin Cooks and Broncos’ Jerry Jeudy, but were unable to reach an agreement before the deadline.

Dаllаs players, coaches and front office members have made it clear that the team is interested in adding Odell Beckhаm Jr. Despite the team’s actions, owner Jerry Jones stressed that if no action is ultimately taken, he is happy with the current wideout group.

“I really like where we are with our receiving core,” Jones explained during a Nov. 8 interview with 105.3 The Fаn’s “Shan аnd RJ.” “Of course we have [Jаmes] Washington is coming back. And that’s big. We have Gallup, who I think is getting better, at the level we would expect him to be. [He’s] improve every day. Of course, [CeeDee] Lаmb, we think he’s everything we wanted from our #1 receiver.

“I like the way we throw the ball at our tight ends and I think that matters in this conversation as it could basically dictate how aggressive we are with any type of supplements we do.” here have our recipients. … We may or may not get there when it comes to adding wide receivers, but when we don’t, I like where we are.”
