PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks signed reliever Miguel Castro for one season on Friday.
Castro, who turns 28 this month, has played eight major league seasons, most until recently with the New York Yankees. He went 5-0 with a 4.03 ERA in 34 appearances last season.
The 6-foot-7 (2-meter) right-hander has averaged more than one strikeout per inning over the past three seasons.
The bullpen was a pain point for Arizona this year, and general manager Mike Hazer said it was a priority to improve that aspect, particularly with power pitching.
The Diamondbacks finished 74-88 last season, a 22-win improvement over a dismal season in 2021.
Arizona also acquired catcher Ali Sánchez, who the Pittsburgh Pirates made available to other teams.
Sánchez played in seven major league games with the Mets and Cardinals over the past two seasons.
