Munich: 30 years after reunification, the ARD doping editorial team has succeeded in shedding light on a highly explosive aspect of the GDR state doping system that has never received public attention: with top-secret experiments on amateur athletes, attempts were made to find the decisive factor in the class struggle with the West Gaining advantage – human trials for more medals.
The documentary “Doping as a Secret Matter: Human Experiments – The Secret Experiments in GDR Sport” reveals: GDR amateur athletes served as “guinea pigs” for experiments that the stars and talents of the GDR should not be expected to do with.

Many recreational athletes received unexplored substances, the effects and side effects of which were often unknown. Unscrupulous physicians experimented on these unsuspecting people with sometimes dangerous means and methods such as animal experiments. It was about researching training methods, also with the aim of testing the performance-enhancing effects of doping substances before they were used by the stars of the regime.
Leading scientists repeatedly violated elementary human rights – with possibly hundreds of those affected. 30 years after reunification, some of them have their first detailed say in “The secret matter of doping: human experiments”.
The ARD doping editorial team goes to the former sites of these experiments, shows some original recordings of this type of test series that have not been published before, and presents historical documents that prove these acts.
This previously untold chapter of sports fraud also contributed to the fact that the GDR sports stars often had the upper hand in the battle of the systems.
“Doping as a secret: Human experiments – The secret experiments in GDR sport” is a film by Hajo Seppelt, Jörg Mebus and Josef Opfermann.
