Lavern, the dog of Dr. Dee, has imbalance and needs to go to the clinic. Although the vet is very worried, she has to fly to Kaltag with her husband Ken. The village on the Yukon is a checkpoint for the Iditarod race. Dr. Dee has to vaccinate the sled dogs here because 60 teams with 20 dogs each from all over the world come through the town during the race. The veterinarian is also in favor of having the dogs neutered because otherwise the risk of cancer will increase sharply, but the people from Kaltag are afraid of hurting their animals.
