Ecuadorian educators protest salary homologation

Summoned by the National Union of Educators (UNE), Ecuadorian teachers staged this Thursday in different cities of the country, a day of mobilizations demanding to enforce the reforms proposed to the Organic Law of Intercultural Education (LOEI).

Under the slogan “let them all go”, the teachers mobilized in Quito from the insurance fund to the center of the city, to the Constitutional Court, closing Maldonado Avenue, to the south in Guayaquil, they cut the Perimetral road, while Concentrations were also reported in Ibarra, in the north of that nation.

Among the main demands that educators demand from the Government of Guillermo Lasso and that the Constitutional Court will have until May 23 to rule on whether it will ratify the proposed reforms to the LOEI, is salary equalization, the guarantee of the budget to the education, as well as the activation of the school violence observatory.

Proposal that was vetoed by President Lasso and that, among other issues, projects an increase in the basic salary for more than 100,000 teachers in the South American nation from 817 to 986 dollars per month.

By the way, the National Coordinator of the UNE, Andrés Quishpe, stressed that “the marches are taking place to demand that the Executive comply with the salary equality recognized by the Constitutional Court (CC) and to also tell this instance to ratify that right. It’s 11 years that the teaching profession has been relegated from this right”.
