Execution of a woman suspended on death row in the US

An American federal judge has execution suspended scheduled for this Tuesday of Lisa Montgomery, the only woman in the death row in the US, pending a jurisdiction hearing on the case.

According to CNN, Judge James Hanlon has ordered the suspension in order to allow that hearing to take place, for which no date has yet been set. His order suspends Montgomery’s execution by lethal injection, scheduled for Tuesday at the Terre Haute Federal Correctional Complex in Indiana.

Lisa Montgomery, 52, was convicted in 2007 of strangling a 23-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant in 2004 to take her baby, who was later recovered safe and sound by authorities.

If carried out, this would be the first execution of a woman in the United States in almost 70 years and would occur just days after the Democrat’s inauguration as president. Joe Biden, which is opposed to capital punishment.
