Basilica of Saint Francis Uses AI and Lasers for Restoration

Franciscan friars at the 13th-century Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi are utilizing artificial intelligence, lasers, and gigapixel cameras to repair and preserve the historic church. A collaborative team including art historians, software engineers, and a tech company is working to restore the structure and its famous Giotto frescoes. This digital preservation effort follows severe damage sustained during two earthquakes in 1997. The ongoing project captures ultra-high-definition photography to create a digital archive and twin of the masterpieces.

   Why it matters

Built more than 800 years after the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, the basilica stands as a major religious and artistic landmark. The church houses critical works of art that require advanced technological interventions to secure their long-term survival. The integration of modern software tools highlights an evolving method for protecting vulnerable cultural heritage sites against natural disasters.
