A man thought he’d found a stray kitten. It turned out to be a new species of wild cat
A tiny wild cat discovered in Bolivia after a man found it beside a road and kept it at home has been identified as a new species named Leopardus tilcayo. This marks the first completely new living wild cat species named in more than a century. While science previously viewed every new cat discovery over the past hundred years as a reclassification of existing animals, this feline represents an unfamiliar animal on a branch of the cat family tree that nobody had drawn. The tiny cat has now become an unlikely tourist attraction in the cloud forests of Coroico.

Why it matters
For more than a century, every new wild cat discovery turned out to be a reclassification of an already known animal rather than a genuinely unfamiliar species. The local people of Bolivia's cloud forest reportedly knew about the animal all along. Genomic analysis later placed the creature on a brand new branch of the cat family tree.
