Ring Introduces First Smart Lock Featuring Hand-Cranked Backup Power

Amazon subsidiary Ring announced its debut smart deadbolt lock, priced at $249 and equipped with a physical hand-crank dial to power the device if the battery fails. Scheduled for release in the United States in early 2027, the keyless entry system features a built-in keypad and a fingerprint reader. However, the hardware cannot yet be sold because it lacks authorization from the Federal Communications Commission. Additionally, the device relies on Amazon Sidewalk for its remote features, which currently functions only within the United States.

   Why it matters

Dead batteries present a primary obstacle for electronic locks, frequently leaving users stranded outside their homes. Ring designed its entry into the smart lock market specifically to counter this issue by incorporating a mechanical power dial that recharges the dead unit manually. Alongside this deadbolt announcement, the brand also expanded its hardware lineup with new 4K and 2K cameras.
