Official statistics show 3,335 square kilometers of forest were cleared between August 2025 and July 2026. This represents a decline of nearly 42 percent compared to the previous year. The data was released on Friday, providing a political boost to incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva just days before a presidential runoff election. Why it mattersThe Amazon rainforest is a critical global carbon sink.
