China Militia Boat Spotted Off Taiwan's East Coast

A Chinese militia boat alongside two other vessels was sighted off Taiwan's Pacific coast in August. According to a surveillance report reviewed by Reuters, this marks the first known sighting of a Chinese militia craft in that sensitive eastern area. The incident comes amid heightened maritime enforcement operations by the Taiwan coastguard, which has deployed water cannons and expelled Chinese vessels from Taiwan-controlled waters, sparking anger in Chinese society.

   Why it matters

Taiwan's east coast faces the open Pacific Ocean, making the appearance of Chinese maritime militia vessels in these waters a notable shift from routine patrols typically concentrated in the Taiwan Strait. Tensions in the region remain elevated due to frequent maritime encounters and aggressive enforcement operations by Taiwan's coastguard against mainland vessels. These interactions continue to provoke diplomatic and societal friction between Beijing and Taipei.
