Ukraine Depletes US-Made Patriot Interceptor Stocks Amid Russian Strikes

Ukraine has completely depleted its supply of interceptors for the US-made Patriot air defense system, exposing the nation to intensified Russian ballistic missile attacks. The shortage comes amid a widening political rift between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the United States. Zelenskyy accused Washington of withholding Patriot missiles that Ukraine already paid for under a NATO initiative and pressuring Kyiv to accept capitulation terms. Meanwhile, international allies including Spain and Greece have refused to surrender their own Patriot systems to aid Ukraine.

   Why it matters

Patriot interceptors are among the few defensive weapons capable of stopping incoming ballistic missiles, but they are expensive and scarce globally. Other nations have burned through their stockpiles or prioritized their own defenses amid conflict in Iran. The exhaustion of these interceptors leaves Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure largely undefended against continuous aerial bombardment.

   What is confirmed

   • Ukraine has run out of missiles for the US-made Patriot air defense system.
   • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the United States is withholding Patriot interceptors purchased by Ukraine under a NATO initiative.
   • Spain and Greece have refused to give up Patriot systems that could assist Ukraine.

   Still unconfirmed

   • The United States is intentionally pushing Ukraine toward capitulation by delaying weapons deliveries.

   What to watch next

   • Decisions by the United States regarding the delivery of purchased Patriot missiles
   • Potential shifts in European allies' willingness to transfer air defense systems to Ukraine
