Why it matters
The disaster struck northern Nepal as the country continues to reel from an earlier devastating flood in August. Disaster authorities reported that the recent flash flood was triggered by an avalanche of rock and ice, echoing the mountain collapse that previously unleashed a destructive wall of water. Flash floods in this terrain pose immediate hazards to both local residents and international tourism, cutting off remote mountain villages.
