Harry Kane Wins Ballon d'Or, Ending 25-Year English Drought

Harry Kane has won the Ballon d'Or, becoming the first Englishman to claim the prestigious football award in twenty-five years. The Bayern Munich and England striker secured the honor following a vote that saw him finish ahead of runner-up Kylian Mbappe. During his acceptance speech, Kane reflected on his challenging career path, acknowledging that he had to endure multiple setbacks and failures before reaching the top of world football. His victory sparked widespread celebrations, including recognition from his first club and a congratulatory message from former teammate Son Heung-min.

   Why it matters

Michael Owen was the last Englishman to win the award prior to Kane, a triumph that Owen suggested lacked full appreciation in England. The achievement highlights Kane's longevity and perseverance after years of overcoming injuries, missed penalties, and a lack of team silverware. Bayern Munich executive Jan-Christian Dreesen subsequently affirmed the club's commitment to Kane by dismissing any current interest in signing Erling Haaland.
