How Ukraine’s Naval Drones Are Remaking War at Sea

Ukraine is transforming its maritime drones from simple attack boats into multifunctional platforms capable of transporting aerial drones and firing surface-to-air missiles. Recent engagements show these vessels engaging in direct combat with other drones and targeting aviation. The Ukrainian Navy recently deployed 11 unmanned surface vessels and eight UAVs during the REPMUS 2026 NATO exercise to demonstrate these capabilities. This shift allows Ukraine to challenge Russian naval dominance and aircraft over the Black Sea using remotely operated systems.

  1. Ukraine Evolves Naval Drone Fleet Into Multifunctional Combat Platforms

    Why it matters

Ukraine lacks a traditional large navy, forcing a reliance on asymmetric unmanned warfare to secure its coastlines. The evolution toward "mini-aircraft carriers" and anti-air capabilities aims to counter Russian submarines and fighter jets. These developments reflect a broader trend of integrating surface, air, and underwater autonomous systems.

    What is confirmed

    • The Ukrainian Navy released footage from September 12, 2026, showing a Sargan-3000 boat using a remotely operated .50-caliber machine gun to sink a Russian craft.
    • Ukraine deployed 11 unmanned surface vessels and eight UAVs at the REPMUS 2026 NATO exercise.
    • Magura V7 maritime drones have been used to shoot down two Russian Su-30 fighter jets over the Black Sea.

    Still unconfirmed

    • Ukrainian naval drones can now carry surface-to-air missiles.
    • Ukraine may produce the Bayraktar TB3 drone domestically to counter Russian submarines.
    • Ukraine is turning marine drones into mini-aircraft carriers.

    What to watch next

    • Confirmation of surface-to-air missile launches from naval drones
    • Results of the first SAS POD tests for anti-submarine warfare
    • Deployment of the Bayraktar TB3 in Ukrainian waters
