IDF kills Hamas Northern Gaza Brigade chief Izz al-Din Bik
The Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet announced Friday that Izz al-Din Bik, the Hamas Northern Gaza Brigade commander, was killed in an airstrike earlier this week. Israeli intelligence determined that Bik oversaw the captivity of 15 Israeli hostages during the war, including civilians Mia Schem and Shani Louk. Bik is also accused of participating in the October 7 massacre. This operation follows a surge in intelligence gathered from the arrest of a Hamas official in Gaza.
Why it matters
The Northern Gaza Brigade is a key operational unit for Hamas. Targeting its leadership aims to degrade the group's ability to manage captives and coordinate attacks. The identification of specific hostages under Bik's control provides a direct link between brigade commanders and the detention of civilians.
