    Why it matters

Pillay's recognition by the Norwegian Nobel Committee follows her leadership of a United Nations commission that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza, findings that were rejected by both Israel and the Trump administration. Her decades-long legal career includes defending anti-apartheid activists in South Africa and breaking racial and gender barriers as the first non-white female judge on the High Court of South Africa. The award highlights ongoing global tensions over international tribunals and accountability frameworks.
