IDF Reserve Members Release 'NAZA: The Real Story' Online

Right-wing Israeli reserve members have released a counter-documentary titled NAZA: The Real Story online with English subtitles. The film challenges the Venice-winning documentary NAZA, which focuses on Israeli military actions in Gaza and features interviews with 24 Israeli military personnel. The Israeli Defense Forces slammed the original documentary as manipulative, misleading, and based on factual errors. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded a sweeping investigation and criminal prosecution of the Israeli soldiers who participated in the original film, alleging security offenses, criminal defamation, and harm to national interests.

   Why it matters

The original documentary NAZA draws on interviews with more than 100 sources, including military personnel, to examine Israeli conduct during the Gaza war, including the use of AI-based systems. In response, Israeli embassies in the UK and US have promoted the rival counter-documentary to intercept the global narrative. The release has sparked severe internal fallout, with the Israeli government moving to prosecute soldiers who spoke to the original filmmakers.
