Putin Praises Elon Musk as Starlink Rivals Russian Constellation
Russian President Vladimir Putin praised American technology billionaire Elon Musk as a real genius for his work developing the Starlink satellite internet network. Putin delivered the remarks on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa summit. The comments coincided with Russia working to deploy its own domestic orbital constellation named Rassvet to compete with Starlink. Why it matters
The praise for Elon Musk highlights competition in global satellite communications as Russia attempts to build out its own state-backed orbital infrastructure called Rassvet. These technological developments occur alongside the broader armed conflict in Ukraine, where an expansionist Russia fights a Ukrainian nation defending its existence. International observers and cartoonists frequently tie these geopolitical and technological strands to American political figures such as Donald Trump.
