The Race to Defend Kyiv Against Terrifying New Jet-Powered Drones
Ukraine is rapidly expanding its air defense network with interceptor drones, automated turrets, and small missiles to counter faster Russian jet-powered attack drones targeting the nation's energy grid. Russia recently targeted Ukraine with a massive aerial attack involving 580 drones, out of which 536 were downed. Kyiv is leveraging fighter jets, AI-aimed gun turrets, and scarce missiles as Russia increasingly deploys jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones that outrun older defense systems.

Ukraine Defends Kyiv Against New Jet-Powered Drones
Ukraine is rapidly expanding its air defense network with interceptor drones, automated turrets, and small missiles to counter faster Russian jet-powered attack drones targeting the nation's energy grid. Russia recently targeted Ukraine with a massive aerial attack involving 580 drones, out of which 536 were downed. Kyiv is leveraging fighter jets, AI-aimed gun turrets, and scarce missiles as Russia increasingly deploys jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones that outrun older defense systems.
Why it matters
Russia continues to hammer Ukraine's energy grid, leaving all three of Kyiv's combined heat and power plants offline after near-daily strikes. Volunteers are actively working to protect Kyiv's skies as the defense ministry remains tight-lipped about the deployment of new AI-powered turrets around the capital. The introduction of these faster, jet-powered weapons strains traditional air defense capabilities, forcing a race to field advanced interceptors.
